Sympathy simply implies a harmony of feeling, and is often is way to say you "feel someone's pain," or that you have compassion or support for someone!.

Empathy is more identification with another's position, motives, feelings, etc!. I don't know that it's necessarily "deeper," but it's much more along the lines of "putting oneself in another's shoes" rather than simply "I know what you mean!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

Some might argue that, generally speaking, empathy is "deeper" than sympathy!. Sympathizing with someone just means you feel sorry for them but empathizing means you actually feel what they are feeling to some degree or other!. Saying it a different way -- feeling sorry for someone who is in pain is a lot different than actually feeling and/or sharing in their pain!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Empathy is understanding why another feels a certain way, but doesn't mean you nessicarily feel compassion towards them, whereas Sympathy is to "suffer together" so to actually share in and feel their pain and/or feelings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sympathy and empathy are different!.

In general sympathy is feeling sorry for someones situation whereas empathy is imagining yourself in the other person's situation at which Point you can understand better!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
