Size refers generally to the overall dimensions of the body of the guitar but more specifically to the scale length of the guitar!. (Scale length is the length of the strings from the nut to the saddle!.) A full size guitar has a scale length of 24 1/2" to 25 1/2" approximately!. So 1/2 and 3/4 size guitars have scale lengths that are 1/2 and 3/4 of the scale length above, respectively!.

12 is a transition age so he might be ready for a full size guitar!. If you get him something smaller he's likely to outgrow it quickly!. The only way to tell for sure is to go to a large, reputable music store and talk to an experienced salesperson, and to let your son hold a full size guitar and see if it fits him!. There are full size guitars with smaller bodies, called Grand Concert size, that would be more appropriate than a giant size guitar shape like a dreadnought!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You mean guitars not picks right!? you can get 3/4 size guitars, theyre smaller for kids, if he puts on a full size strat and its smothering him then maybe the 3/4 size is better, it has a different tone to a full size but you can still learn ok on it i guess, but he's 12 so he could probablly play a full size, and if he doesnt then youll have to buy one when he gets bigger anyway!. i havent tried 3/4 or 1/2 but Id guess that theres some habits youd get that wouldnt work on a full size, like hand/thumb/wrist postition and angle!. but its his choice get him to try themWww@QuestionHome@Com

Im gonna guess, and say 3/4 size of a real guitar!.

so its slightly smaller than a normal guitar, and 1/2 size is half the size!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
