The first Northern European mission (1497) was that of the English expedition led by the Italian, John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto)!.

In 1524, Giovanni da Verrazzano became the first recorded European to visit the East Coast of the present-day United States!. The expeditions of Cabot, Jacques Cartier (first voyage 1534) and others were mainly hoping to find an oceanic Northwest Passage to Asian trade!.

The Portuguese Jo?o Vaz Corte-Real in Newfoundland; and Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635) who explored Canada and New York!.

If the Age of Exploration is from the 15th to 17th centuries, you cannot forget that starting in the late 16th century, the Spanish, the British, the French, Swedes and the Dutch began to colonize eastern North America!. Many early attempts—notably the Lost Colony of Roanoke—ended in failure, but successful colonies were soon established!.

In 1562 Jean Ribault headed an expedition that explored the St!. Johns River area in Florida!. His efforts were followed two years later by a second venture headed by René de Laudonnière!.

Queen Elizabeth granted charters to Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh to colonize America!. Gilbert headed two trips to the New World!. He landed on Newfoundland but was unable to carry out his intention of establishing military posts!. A year later, Raleigh sent a company to explore territory he named Virginia after Elizabeth, the "Virgin Queen," and in 1585, he sponsored a second voyage, this time to explore the Chesapeake Bay region!.

In 1638 the Swedish West India Company established a settlement on the Delaware River near present-day Wilmington called Fort Christina!.

In 1626 Peter Minuit became director-general of the Dutch West Indies Company!. He purchased Manhattan Island from the Indians for $24 and founded the settlement of New Amsterdam!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
