Been reading too many history chapters at once, have you!? The Loyalists and Patriots are from the Revolutionary War - Patriots favored the revolution, Loyalists against it!.
This was in the 1770s, the Civil War was almost a century later, in the 1860s!.

The colonists were the first Europeans to come to America, starting in the early 1600s!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Assuming we're speaking of the American War of Independence, then your question is a bit garbled, but I'll take a swing at it!.

The Unionists (United Empire Loyalists) were those British Colonists in North America (in what is today the United States) which decided to stay loyal to King and Crown!. At the close of the war, with the British retreating, many of these Loyalists fled for Canada (and elsewhere) fearing for their lives!. The Patriots had seen them, during the war, as traitors, and although Congress declared that those old animosities would be forgotten, most of the Loyalists didn't believe those glib assurances!.

I presume I've helped to clarify this!? The Colonists were the Europeans (Mostly British, but with significant minorities of Irish, Scotch Irish, Dutch, German and French Huguenots) who were living in North America in the British colonies!. The Patriots were those who argued for , and usually fought for independence from Great Britain, while the Loyalists were those who argued and fought to keep the colonies connected to the British government!.

i think they were the loyalists!. they were trying to preserve what was already there like with britain and the colonies!. the patriots wanted to break away like the south wanted to break away!. and colonists are the people that live in a colony!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, lets look at the border states of Kentucky and Missouri!. Both states passed Ordinances of Secession in November and October respectively!. But it was their loyalist governments which kept them in the Union!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In my opinion they were loyalists in that they stayed loyal to the US Government, and patriots too as they fought and many died to keep the US united and to free the slaves!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
