Henry VIII broke with the Catholic Church when the Pope refused to anul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon so that he could marry Anne Boleyn!. By breaking with Rome, Henry declared himself to be the Head of the Church of England -- although his belief system was decidedly Catholic!. However, the Reformation had taken hold in Europe and England, and this was seen as an opportunity to step away from Catholicism and embrace an early form of Protestantism!.

Elizabeth I's settlement of the Church of England was an attempt to heal the wounds England had suffered under her sister, Mary I ("Bloody Mary"), who was determined to bring England back under Catholicism and pursued "heretics" and "unbelievers"!. She did not want to rule over a country divided by religious wars, and while she embraced Protestantism as the growing majority of her subjects did, she was also tolerant of the Catholics in her realm!. "There is but one Lord, Jesus Christ !. !. !. the rest are just trifles," is often attributed to Elizabeth, as her summary of the difference between Protestants and Catholics!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
