How long is a piece of string!? It all depends on the sources of information you can find, whether these are preserved, or whether you can read them, or whether they connect to people in your tree!. It very much depends on whether there are any records kept too!. Many records have disappeared for all sorts of reasons!.
I gather that some Indian societies have records that go back a few hundred years - see Gurinder Chadha on "Who do you think you are!?" BBC's genealogy programme!. Depending on where your ancestry is, you may find that there are records, and then again, there may not be!.!.!. Sorry, I know that some people claim to have their family tree back to the Normans in the UK, but I think this is extremely rare!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Emperor of Japan can go back a thousand years or more!. Some people in Iceland can go back to Eric the Red!. Some of the royalty in Europe can get back to the early middle ages!. In all three cases there might be some hank-panky that didn't get reported, so the chances of a line that long being 100% accurate is slim!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most of my research stops at the Atlantic Ocean!. I would need records from all over Northern Europe!.

Many of those who claim ancestry back to Charlemagne or William the Conqueror are relying on the research of others!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
