In England most had one by the end of the 14th century and still in many cases it was a few more centuries before the same name was passed down to each generation!. In the Netherlands it wasn't until the reign of Napoleon that people had a surname!. Surnames were based on a)being the son of someone b)where they lived c)their occupation d)some characteristic about them!. When they got through it wasn't impossible for legitimate sons of the same man to have a different surname and still each could have shared their surname with others unrelated!. Some will say we are all related if we go back far enough!. However, the root person of your surname will not necessarily be the root person of someone else with your surname!. They were not started so much to identify a man as a member of a family but for taxation purposes!. Not everyone with the same last name is related!. For example the name Smith referred to an occupation and the name Knolls might refer to a place where someone lived (John of the Knolls became John Knolls and Luke of the Knolls became Luke Knolls)!.
