Hope it helps. If you can find him on the Social Security Death Index (at RootsWeb.com) then you can send for his original SS# application. That will give his birthplace and his parents' names. Good luck! Your local library should have staff who are trained to help in this sort of thing. Good luck I hope Wendy or Shirley can answer this for you as I do not know. However, it is unlikely anyone that was living in 1890 would have a social security number, so he would not be on the social security death index. Social security numbers were established in 1935 and the system was officially in full effect in 1937. Even if he were born in 1890, that would make him 47 by 1937. Many people at that age in 1937 probably did not worry about applying for one. I take it, however, that he was probably a young man when he came here, meaning he would have likely been at least 67 by 1937, therefore, he definitely would most likely have not have applied for a number as he would likely not have qualified for any benefits when the system was brand new. Even people who were born around or after 1937 will not always show up on the death index. Usually, only people who applied for benefits will show up, as their death has to be reported to social security to stop benefits. |
