Position:Home>Genealogy> For genealogical purposes, what does this mean?Question:I found this entry in an old book. I'm confused who this guy's children are. Who are the people in parentheses (Sarah, Job, Timothy, Timothy) after his name? If these are his children, then who are the people listed as his children? DANIEL CLARK BROWN (Sarah, Job, Timothy, Timothy), son of Rufus and Sarah (Clark) Brown, b. in South Coventry, Tolland Co., Conn., June 28, 1835, m. Jane Bonham, Sept. 25, 1861. He died Oct. 21, 1894, aged 59. Children: Rebecca Jane, b. June 22, 1862 David Arthur, b. July 27, 1872 Thanks! Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I found this entry in an old book. I'm confused who this guy's children are. Who are the people in parentheses (Sarah, Job, Timothy, Timothy) after his name? If these are his children, then who are the people listed as his children? Daniel was son of Sarah (an entry) who was daughter of Job (another entry) who was son of Timothy (another entry) who was son of Timothy (another entry but no parentage of this Timothy is known). Why it was shown this way, and not Daniel Clark Brown (Rufus, whoever, whoever) is because this entry was presented as a descendant of the last TIMOTHY in the list. Thus the descendancy is Timothy-Timothy-Job-Sarah-Daniel. If the descendancy started with someone on Daniel's father's side, the people in parenthesis would be Rufus, then others, ending with the person who was used to start the descendant tree (or report). The (Clark) in Sarah (Clark) Brown is just showing her maiden name. I would guess that those are his siblings. I'd venture a guess that the only children born to Daniel and Jane (Bonham) Brown are Rebecca Jane and David Arthur. On the names, Sarah, Job, Timothy and Timothy...they might be 1) siblings of Daniel (not unusual to use the same name for a child born after his/her sibling had died... Timothy. Or..someone had searched out Daniel's lines back...and Sarah would be his mother (Sarah (MNU) Brown, daughter of Job Brown, son of Timothy, son of Timothy. Welcome to the confusing ways of how our ancestors kept records. By the by, I have a Bonam line, out of early VA. Keep that in mind...Rebecca is a favorite name for girls in that family. One never knows. its previous generations....daniel's mother is sarah, her father is job and its continues like that Daniel C Brown Born: ABT 1835 , Connecticut Died: 12 JUL 1880 Married: Jane Bonham Born: ABT 1841 ,Lisbon, Wisconsin Died: Their children: Children Name-- Sex-- Birth Jane Brown-- F-- b. Burlington, VT I could find no listing for either Timothy mentioned in your question (unless one died in infancy, I couldn't see why a 2nd son would be given the exact same name. ), Sarah, or Job. Unless, like I thought, they could be Daniel Brown's siblings. Rufus Brown was also a hard one to track down. Could find his name, but no dates. EDIT: After I read the previous entries being Daniel's ancestors by generation, I went back to familysearch.org and found this entry for Job in the 1790 Census of Essex County, NJ: 1. BROWN, Job NEWARK TWP 002 JULTX (Name) (city/town) (page--type) 2.BROWN, Job NEWARK TWP 002 FEBTX (listing 2 is the Pre-census of 1790) www.ancestry.com-- Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 Name: Timothy Brown Gender: Male Birth Date: 8 Apr 1753 Birth Location: Canaan Parent Name: Timothy Parent Name: Mary Marriage: 1774 in Somerset, Tolland, Connecticut, to: Irena Ward Born: 22 Feb 1747 Somerset, Tolland, Connecticut, USA American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) Name: Timothy Brown (son of above??) Birth Date: 1780 Birthplace: Connecticut Volume: 20 Page Number: 349 Reference: Records of Ct. Men who served in the War of 1812. Hartford, 1889. (169p.):24 This is just normal for vague American genealogical information. The names could be his ancestors, siblings or children. The person who wrote it knew, and expected everybody else to, too! You're looking at what's called a Descendent Tree. Simply put, the tree is of a specific family and traces back to "Generation 1" (the earliest known couple). The family is pretty clearly the Clark family that's being researched. In this case, the last Timothy in brackets is Generation 1. The next Timothy, working from right to left in that list is his son...hence Gneration 2. Job was Timothy's son...Generation 3 Sarah was Job's daughter...Generation 4 Daniel is part of the 5th generation of this family...tracing back to Timothy via Sara, Job and the 2nd Timothy. Rebecca and David, children of Daniel, are the 6th generation of the family. It's actually very unconfusing once you get used to reading this. What it does is let you look at the great big extended family of Timothy and keep track of which person traces back to him through which line. |
