Drowning girl is among his pictures based on comic strips illustrating themes of passion, romance, science fiction, violence, and war. In these, For many of these works which he produced after 1960, Lichhtenstein employed techniques associated with commercial art such as magnifying projectors and spray-gun stencils creating dots to make the pictures look like newspaper cartoons seen through a magnifying glass.
He used oil and Magna paint for many of his best known works, among them Drowning Girl (1963, Museum of Modern Art, New York), which features thick outlines, bold colors and Benday Dots to represent certain colors, as if created by photographic reproduction. Rather than attempt to reproduce his subjects in a realist way, his work reflects the the way that the mass media portrays their subject matter (e.g. death, drowning etc)
Drowning girl is depicted as brunette deluged beneath a torrent of color. This image was thought to be Lichenstein witty response to the paintings of Willem de Kooning, a contemporary of his, who produced savage depictions of women through the use of strong colors and violent brushstrokes.
