Take a lightbulb (burnt out one to save money, may as well use it first) cover it with vaseline (to help it be non-stick) and help the child paper mache the light bulb with many layers of paper mache...so that its thick. Let it dry. The next day (or whenever it may be fully dry and solid) break the bulb and remove all glass. This should be easier because of the vaseline. Let the child paint the bulb with any sort of paint, acrylics are best. Once the paint is dry the child can glue wool on for hair. You can make a pattern for a puppet jacket and glue it into the bulb to make a hand puppet.

Teach them to chrochet. I learned whne I was nine and have been chrocheting almost none stop ever since. 23 years. It is fun, easie and creative. If you are looking for something a little simpler try quick dry polimer clay. Visit your local hoby lobby store and you will find anything your heart desires having to do with arts and crafts. That is my favorite store in the world.

If you want something even simpler try pom pom animals. Again, hobby lobby is your answer. Not to sound sacriligious but to a crafter that place is equal to a temple. LOL
