Question:

A now modern popular area which name indicates sth totally different?

My sister is trying to find famous areas or monuments around the world that have now become popular and highly visited...yet their names mean or indicate sth different...or an opposite meaning

Can you think of examples?

Heck yes, Mount Lavender in southern Bulgaria was once called Mount Liverwurst but the name didn't role off the tongue so it was changed to mean Lavender the color of Liver once cooked and cooled to room temp! Yum Yum. Hope that helped.
