The state of nature is a thought experiment used by many political philosophers, (most notably Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau) at the beginning of their texts or writings!. The purpose is to define what human nature is or is not, and from there develop a political philosophy based on your view of humanity!. For example, Hobbes believed humans were rotten, and consequently, he developed an oppressive political philosophy!.

Rousseau's state of nature was epitomized by what he called the "noble savage"!. The NS did not have many dealings with other men, and was neither good nor bad!. The beginning of society (and inequality) was when one NS was able to convince others that he owned a piece of land, and it evolved from there!.

Really, Rousseau is interesting reading, so if this is for homework you should give it a shot!. Otherwise, try sparknotes for an accurate, brief, and well articulated summary!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
