Yes, he was saying the perception is reality!. He argued that since the people in the cave knew nothing of the outside world, only the shadows on the wall, so their reality was the shadows!. Whenever I talk about Plato's cave, I use this example : A man grows up in a room filled only with a TV and remote, a water dispenser, A food dispenser, and a couch in front of the TV!. The TV only gets two channels, Cartoon network and Animal Planet!. This man would grow up thinking that the world was consisting of people dropping anvils on each other and a brutal society in which only the fittest survive!. That is his reality; it doesn't matter that those worlds don't exist in our reality, but since they exist in his, that's all that matters!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

These answers miss the point!. Inside the cave man apprehends through sense experience!. Outside the cave man apprehends the Forms directly through intellectual intuition!. A posteriori sense experience is illusory; a priori knowledge of the forms is infallible (the apriori/aposteriori terminology was not used by Plato however) !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He is trying to say that even those who believe themselves enlightened, and correct know nothing, because the second you leave that cave no one will know anything about the outside and will find they were incorrect all along!. (Man has a way of doing this every where he goes)Www@QuestionHome@Com
