Ok the other guys are not answering you!. They haven't read the question!.

Now!.!.!.normally the way most strings are mounted if you turn the key Clockwise as you hold it, the string will go down in tune!. If someone strung it up wrong it might go the other way!. but 99% of the time it should be clockwise lower, counter clockwise higher!. It's very easy to check!. just pluck your D string and turn the key a little way (half turn!.)
You will immediately hear which way it's going!. It is always best, BTW,
to loosen the strings a little bit and tune up instead of tuning down!.
You get a more accurate tune that way!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

if your A string is in tune you can hold it on the 5th fret and it will play a D!. then tune your D string to your A string held on the 5th fretWww@QuestionHome@Com

Away to tune up, towards to tune down!. So you would turn it towards you to make the pitch lower!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

instead of saying 5th fret and making her count from the 1 fret to the 5th, just say 2nd dot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
