Guitarists either learn some scale shapes, and then improvise using different licks and phrases, so they'll almost be making it up as they go along, playing 'in the moment' but with their own specific style!.

Or some guitarists prefer to work out what they're going to play beforehand!. They'll go over the song slowly and work out melodic ideas that work well, and then put together the phrases and licks that make up the solo!.

Personally I prefer to do a bit of both waysWww@QuestionHome@Com

All you need is to be able to write music!. Ofcourse the more of music theory you know (scales, appregios etc!.) the more complex you will be able to make the solo!. If you've been playing the guitar for 24 hours and you understand it, then in theory, you can do write a solo!. Just like writing songs, writing solos come naturally and no one can 'teach' you how to write one!. You can get hints and tips on writing them though, search google for solo tutorials or check the sites in the source to lessons on soloing!.

The most you'll find is most likely advice on how to use things like repetitions and linking scales together!.

Your only limitation is your own imagination!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

theory and a good ear!. Theory isn't as necessary the better your ear is but you should always learn it well!. Creativity helps too, creativity in using the underlying harmonic motion and in creativity in rhythm!.
