i am thinking about buying a new guitar, and i want one with a tremolo bridge (ex!. Floyd Rose)

my question involves tuning!. if the tremolo bridge is adjusted for E Standard, does it have to be re-adjusted to go to Drop D!. or only major differences such as E Standard to Drop C!? and how is it adjusted!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, if you tune down you will have to readjust the spring tension!. You unscrew the back plate and rearrange or add/remove springs to adjust the tension according to the new tuning!. Same goes for when you change string gauges!.

In addition, most higher-end tremolo bridge guitars have locking nuts, so that the instrument doesn't get out of tune when using the tremolo arm!. This also restricts you from retuning your guitar!. So on top of changing spring tension, you would have to remove the locking nuts, then reapply them after you've finished tuning to Drop D!.

Obviously it isn't easy to change spring tension and remove the locking nut every time you want to play Drop D, so if you plan on alternating between the two often, I suggest you get a set bridge guitar!. That is one of the biggest restrictions of Tremolo bridges!.

I have a Cort with a Floyd Rose (and locking nut) that I keep in Standard E!. I also have a Fender Strat (no locking nut, but not a Floyd Rose, so you can't do any crazy stuff with it anyways) that I keep in E flat!. Finally, I use my Schecter most of the time, which remains in Standard C# (Between the Buried and Me stuff)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
