Question: Is the Oboe impossible to learn for a person with no experience in reed instruments!?
Hi!.
I have absolutely no experience playing any type of woodwind instrument, but would like to learn to play the oboe!.
I have heard and read that playing the oboe is a very difficult instrument to learn!. Is it impossible for me to learn this instrument!? Or is there some hope!?

I'd appreciate any kind of advice on the oboe!.
Thanks!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The oboe is a tricky instrument but it's certainly not impossible - experience with other woodwinds is not necessary!. Do you have other musical experience - you'll progress faster if you're not having to learn how to read music at the same time as you're learning the technicalities of the instrument!. My mum (who, it must be said, is a music teacher) took the oboe up in her 40s and did very well with it, with her only prior woodwind experience being the recorder - which is not exactly a difficult instrument to play! Find yourself a good teacher and go from there :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I;m an oboe major in college who also had experience teaching Middle school and elementary school band for 3 years!.!.!.

It's not impossible, but it is difficult!. Reeds are very expensive and run you any where from 10-25 dollars each!. You will certainly need instruction on it and is not an instrument you can learn on your own or pick up and play in a day!. You need to have VERY good lungs and it will often make you dizzy when you start!. They are not cheap instruments either!. I recommend going to a music store and trying one before making an investment in one!.

If you want to learn an instrument quickly, I recommend the saxophone!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

All I can tell is my own experience!.
I new how to read music but had never played anything but stringed instruments!.
I had a friend who was an excellent oboe player!. He used to make reeds for other players, and taught me how to make reeds also!. We had a pretty good business making oboe reeds!. In explaining to me how the oboe double reed works, my friend had me making sounds on one without an oboe attached!. It took me a few minutes to get my first sound and a little longer to sustain a sound!. With the oboe attached, I found it easier and soon was playing!.
Oboe is not my main instrument and I haven't played one in years, but for me it was one of the easier instruments to play!. Most likely because I had a good teacher!.
You can do it!.

Just don't give up and I'm sure you'll do fine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
