Children often express a desire to eat candy for dinner rather than broccoli; to play video games rather than do maths; to run around screaming rather than learn to write effectively!.

The facts are that the brain is physically affected in a positive way by learning to play an instrument!. I believe the child should have his or her choice of instrument, but playing should not be an option!. Practice!? well, that's part of life!.

If you could see the MRIs of brains of musicians vs!. non-musicians, and the physical changes that occur in the brain and show up on a MRI after just twenty minutes of lessons, you'd be beating down the doors of the nearest music teacher to sign up your child for lessons!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would never make my child learn an instrument, but if he expressed interest in playing one, I would totally give him the opportunity!.

If he didn't want to practice, then, fine!. He doesn't have to practice all the time!. Music is supposed to be fun, in my opinion, not a chore!. But if I've enrolled him in lessons and he didn't want to go, after a little bit he won't get to go anymore!. I'm not gonna waste money on it if he's not gonna do it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There's a big difference between giving a child the opportunity to learn and "having them learn"!.

My kids know that if they don't practice, the lessons, and the orchestras, and the music days, will stop - I'm not throwing money at giving them an opportunity if they aren't prepared to put any work in!. They don't always practice and I certainly don't make them practice every day!.!.!.but they'd rather practice than not do all the fun things associated with playing instruments!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you cant make a horse drink
dont worry, if a kid wants to learn they will and nothing will stop them!.
Sometimes they dont know they have it in them and you may need to start them off with an instrument, which may not be the right one for them!.
You will soon know which one is correct and yes if the kid starts to learn it will forever be a very rewarding thing for the rest of their lives
its not what you want or like its what they want and like, you simply aim them and help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

exposure to music is vital - whether or not you should make them play an instrument is another story!. I wanted to play the violin when I was a child - i did not, however, want to practice!. children rarely do - its like homework who wants to do home work!? whatever ways you make them to do their homework, try that method to have them practice!. good luck - I know my parents endured great ear torture when I was learning to play the violin!. good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I believe every child needs an exposure to the Fine Arts!.
Unlike many, I think that Arts should be taught like other subjects!. It is great that the child loves playing an instrument, but should study it even if they don't!. Art is as important in life as many of the subjects we insist our children study!.
I will not insist that my child continue studying forever (Music or Geography) but I expect them to learn both!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I believe musical instruction helps broaden the mind, so I did have my child take music lessons (flute, clarinet, guitar and piano) beginning at age 7!. When the bellyachin' started about practice I just said "tough, it's part of your homework, go do it!." I'm learning guitar and piano myself to keep my mind sharp as I age!. If reading is fundamental, so is reading music!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The child should take music lessons only if he or she expresses an interest in taking them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Only if they show an interest!. Why force them!? Www@QuestionHome@Com
