If you are interested Only in certain type of music where electric guitars are the instrument of choice then that is the instrument you probably should get started with!.

In my own (non-professional) opinion I do think
that the acoustic guitars (either steel strings or nylon strings) are more versatile for playing all types of music

If you are new to guitar playing you should be
aware that steel strings acoustic have the
"hardest" strings (approx 7 t0 9 lbs pressure)
to play and get a good sound!.

Next come the electric guitars ,they do have steel strings but the strings are much thinner and need about 5 to 7 lbs of pressure to sound well!.

The "easiest-less punishing" on the fingers are
the nylon strings used by the classical guitars!.
They only need 3 to 5 lbs of pressure to sound well

All three types of instruments use the same
tuning of E A D G B E and therefore if you know
the fretboard on one you can play the others as well!.

Steel-string acoustic are most often called "folk"
style or "finger-picking" (but many players use picks ) and is most often used for chord-playing and back-up in guitar groups!.

Nylon strings are preferred by musicians that
play strictly with their fingers!.
Very few picks players in this group!. It is the
preferred instrument for the melody playng
part of the music!.
This is the preferred instrument for players of classical guitar music!. Maybe that is why is called the "classical guitar" but again you can play anything the other guitars play!.

The sound of nylon strings is "mellower"
and the sound of steel strings is "brighter"!. Steel-string guitars outsell all other types of guitars in the USA market!.

If you know how to read music for the guitar,
you may enjoy the nylon strings perhaps a little
better since there is a lot of good printed music
(no tabs) for the guitar available!.

If you just want to play chords then the steel
strings will probably will do fine (after you "train"
your fingers with the steel-strings "hardness")!.

The electric is also fine for everything but you must spend extra $$$ to get the amplifier!. The quality of the sound you get will be very much dependent on the quality of the speaker-amplifier you get!.
Try more than one with the same instrument
and you can notice a difference!.

Whatever you do Enjoy your guitar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Whenever this question is asked it gets lots of responses that tell you to start with an acoustic guitar!. While all I own and play are acoustic guitars my answer is different!. I say look at the music you like and want to be able to play and see what kind of guitars are used!. If that's electric then by all means start with the electric since that will keep you motivated and on the road to success!.

Keep in mind that if you start with an electric guitar you will also need an amp!. Electric starter packs complete with guitar, amp, tuner, extra strings, and more are available at a reasonable price for stores like Guitar Center and Sam Ash!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have gave guitar lessons for 12 years!. I always recommend to start out on the electric guitar!. It is easier to play notes and chords and a lot more forgiving if you make a mistake!. also, in general, most songs that people want to play call for an electric guitar!. I've also noticed that the people who normally start out on the acoustic, generally get frustrated with it and quit or go and buy an electric guitar!. Hope that this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think acoustic guitar!. It's much easier to learn the electric once you've got the hang of the acoustic!. also, the acoustic doesn't need to be plugged in, so you're more likely to be playing it no matter what!. Believe me, the more available it is to you, the more you'll play!. The more you play, the better you get!.

Good luck to you, whichever you decide to choose =)

edit: omg, i just read the answer of the guy above me, and realised I was totally owned! LOLWww@QuestionHome@Com

its much better to start with an acoustic because then you can work on getting a nice clean sound!. plus, open chords and barred chords are much more popular amongst acoustics!. acoustic is also good because of blues players and such, which is a good genre of music to start playing with because you can go anywhere from that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
