First don't learn how to play your favorite songs!. They lose the magic after all the million times you play along to them to get it just right!.

Find the songs that inspired your favorite songs!. That are in the same style/genre!. Learn some of those even if they are hard to play!.

Solos just to show off can be fun but they don't advance your music!. If your planning on composing work more on melody and then create melodic solos!. If all you know how to do is layer leads over stuff your not much use to most bands!. So split your time between the two!. Be good with both chords and leads!.

As for specific songs, right now anything that stretches you!. Makes you work to learn it!. That's more important than the chops you learn!. Unless your goal is to play covers and nothing else you'll lock yourself into a box if you ingrain only certain styles!. It's much harder to break out of a box like that than it is to learn progressively more difficult chops!. That said difficult does not equal better!. Music boils down to "does it sound good!?" Hell's Bells is easy to play but it sounds good!. that's what counts!.

Hey man I already saw this vid haha!. If you like metal/buy some of Troy Stetina's Books (he has one on metal rhythm and thrash method) and buy a metronome (learn how to use it)!. Get a teacher!.!.!.even if it is for a couple lessons to show you how to physically do stuff!.
Chip away at the stone every day and you'll begin to see improvement!.
I recommend working out to to get in touch with your body and give yourself some discipline that you can apply to guitar - you ever notice most of the guitar heroes are physically fit and athletic looking!.

good luck
