Question: I can't memorize anything for my piano recital!!?
Okay so every year I have a piano recital I get so nervous I always break down crying when my teacher tells me I need to pick a song because when I was little we had a practice piano recital and I blanked out and since then I havent been able to let go of it! I also can not memorize anything, I find it difficult to even memorize a simple two page song!. Last year my teacher let me bring my sheet music up which helped but it just felt well awkward since basically everyone else memorized their songs!.

1) What would you think if someone brought their sheet music up!? (be honest, i can take criticism)

2) Any tips for memorizing songs!?

3) How do I stop getting so nervous!?

The piano recital isnt tell like March but it makes me really nervous just thinking about it! Please help me!Www@QuestionHome@Com

1) I think that the sheet music is a possible ok!. It honestly depends on your age!. I don't know how old you are, but at a certain age it's going to be expected that you are able to memorize something!.

2) Your songs/music has phrases to it, much like speaking or singing!. Start by learning the song all the way through, then, starting at the end, pick the last phrase of the song and play it over an over until you can do it with your eyes close/ not looking!. Then do the next to last phrase + the last phrase!. and so on and so on until you get the whole thing!. This works especially well because the easiest part to remember is the beginning, and since you end up doing the end more, it will only get better as you go, leaving a best impression on the audience!.

3) to ease the nerves, practice relaxing before you hit the stage!. While you're waiting your turn backstage if you can, lay on you back and close your eyes and imagine your whole body getting really heavy!. Concentrate on each part starting with your fingertips and toes and working your way in until your whole body feels completely relaxed, then as you stand up imagine that you left all the weight on the floor and you are actually floating to your feet!. (helps to practice this a few times before the big event, and takes only about 2 min)

another thing you need to do is practice doing it in front of your family!. have your own practice recital at home

Hope this helps Www@QuestionHome@Com

Memorization is not as important to me as it seems to be to many others!.

Playing from the sheet music gives you something to be thinking about that takes your mind away from the audience!.
If you can find something else to concentrate on like the chords and the melody etc!. then you have a new focus point!.

I suggest you start today memorizing something!.
Something about 1 minute long!. Something easy!.
Memorize the very last measure or group of measures (what ever is easiest)
Now back up a bit and memorize a new section continuing on to what you already have memorized!. Keep adding until you have it all!.
This may take a day or two!.
See if you can play it again the next day!. If not memorize again!.
After you have a piece memorized, find a new one to do!. Memorize a little bit every day!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
