learning other peoples songs is a good way to start, but if you want to jam or write your own stuff you're gonna have to memorize the fret board and learn scales!. if you want to be a good guitarist learn some music theory!.
in my opinion, the best thing you can do is spend 15-20 minutes a day learning the fret board and basic scales and chords, then 10-15 just messing around, figuring out how to create different sounds etc, and 10-15 mins on music theory!.
there is no rule book when it comes to music!. there is no set amount of time it takes to become good, it's different for everyone!. a musician is never done learning about music, even the greatest guitar players of all time will never fully master the art of playing guitar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the first thing you gotta do to be able to free style/ jam with people is to memorize a song!. imagine if everyone kept reading and playing ray charles or mozart!. we would have never developed the kinda rock or hip hop music we have today!. go memorize a few songs, learn the licks!. learn what part of them are similar and why the band or artist has used that style in that phrase of music!. understand that music is just like talking!. you talk in phrases!. in sentences!. finish a sentence adn then quickly follow it by another one while playing or jamming!.

as for should you get a teacher, not really unless you got some serious cash flow and nothing to do with it!. the one thing you should surely do though is to learn theory!. some people don't know this, but playing tabs will not get you anywhere!. i wanna see you playing tabs to a song you never heard!.!.!.!. cant be done, you wouldn't know the rhythm!. if you know how to read sheet music then you can :D

practice , live with your guitar, see it as an extension of your mind and tongue!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
