Hi Bumble

Mariah has 5 and a half octave and so does Christina Aquilera and not in falsetto either!.

If you want to find your range, sing your lowest note and compare it to the piano or guitar or whatever instrument!.
Now, sing your highest note and note that as well!.

The number of notes between your lowest note and the highest note is divided by 8!. That will give you your range in octave!.
Or count as others suggested!. Count 8 note from your lowest note, than another 8, etc!.!.!.!.

edit Jess!.!.!.they are not studio tweaked by the way and yes, they have a 5 1/2 octave range!. Read up before saying anthing!. If she starts one octave below middle C, that gives her the range mentioned and to inform you that a piano has 8 octave!.
My ex- neighbor Celine Dion, which I know personally and recorded with her btw, has a 5 octave range , no sweat, as well!. A studio can tweak a voice only as far as tone , not in range!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

an octave is an eight note span - a scale is 8 notes!. Mariah Carey probably doesn't ACTUALLY have a five octave, because I doubt she sings as low as a man (although she sings Colleratura, which is higher than soprano and very rare), which I would also apply to Christina Aguilera, although not at Colleratura range!. Both are extensively studio-tweaked!.

also if you are born a soprano it doesn't naturally mean you have an extensive vocal range, it means you sing at a high range!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most adult untrained singers can effectively use between an octave and an octave and a half, trained singers can use a little more, maybe two or even three!. I understand that there are singers who can use four octaves, but they are very, very rare!.

try googling "mariah carey octaves"

The link below is a great one, read it carefully!. It may be a little hard to get if you're not musically knowledgeable, but I think it does a good job of breaking it down for those of us who aren't familiar with the music theory stuff!.

So no, she doesn't have a 5-octave range, and you probably have around two octaves worth of range, enough to credibly sing a great many songs, if you transpose them appropriately or as needed to your vocal range!.

Me, I have just a little over an octave when I'm sick, and barely two when I'm not!.!.!.!. I'm a little limited by it (kinda like Bob Dylan I suppose, who has a similar vocal range) but I try to work within it!. While another answerer credited "Gawd" I'll just say its the genetic roll of the dice, and making the best of it is all you can do!.

A professional voice coach can help you figure out your vocal range, go get some lessons!

you have as many octaves as GOD gave you!. You still have to develop them just as a boxer with "natural " talent has to still train in a GYM, you should seek professional help to develop and hone your God given talent!.

an octave is a scale !. !. !. !. if in the key of "C"
an octave is CDEFGABC - c to c then it starts over HIGHER

Mariah can do that 5 times!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

an octave is a span of 8 notes!. if you can sing a scale of 16 notes, you have a 2 octave vocal range!. Maraiah carey can sing so high simply because she trained her voice to do so and because she was born a soprano!. as far as your voice goes, i cant tell you how many octaves your range is!. only you or a vocal coach can tell you thatWww@QuestionHome@Com
