Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
If you played the piano then you are ahead as a beginner guitar player since you can read the guitar musical staff (G clef)!.
There are many labels that are excellent as an acoustic guitar for a beginner!.
Most guitars sold new for $800!. are manufactured overseas and often come out of the same "machinery" and "factory"!.
Two similar instruments can have a different label on it, yet the street price varies due to the "label"!.
For this reason the new buyer should try more than one instrument within the chosen price range!.
There are Reliable Internet Music Stores
with good products and reliable service including good return policies!.
I have bought my guitars via the Web with good results and excellent service, and not having to pay sales tax or delivery costs!.

The criteria for choosing should be: How does the guitar "sounds" to YOU when you strumm the strings (make sure the guitar is tuned)
AND how does the instrument "feels" in your hands!.
Is the "action" too high or too low!?
Is the fretboard straight!?

Must lower price guitars do need some
adjustment in the action based on the player's choice,
Any guitar tech could adjust it at very little cost!.

Now about the acoustic guitars - Two Types -
The nylon strings guitars (also known as the "classical guitar"), and the steel strings guitars are known as the "Dreadnought guitar"!.
The main difference is in the strings and
the sound projected!.

Nylon strings brings out a more "mellow" sound and Steel strings bring out a more "bright" sound!.
Nylon strings are easier on your fingers and most players do not use a pick - just fingers - to play!.
In guitar musical groups the nylon strings guitar is
preferred for the melody line of the music!.

The Steel strings are "hard" on the fingers (more pressure on the strings is needed to produce a good sound) but eventually most players of this instrument uses a pick!.
Steel strings acoustics are most often used in guitar group playing to back up the melody and play chords!.

Both instruments can play all type of music so it is a matter of personal preference!.

Guitars costing under $200!. will almost always have
a "laminated" top!. This top will take more "rough" treatment but the sound you get when you bought it
will never "improve"!. What you hear now is what you going to "hear" 5 yrs later - (except that you should then be a better player and make it sound much nicer)!.

Solid-top guitars are prefered because
the wood is not cover with any
plastic-like lamination and the instrument resonance is richer and will improve with age!.
There are good beginner-quality solid-top starting at about $200!. and upwards!.

I will also suggest this little book (still a best seller)
for new guitar players: How To Play Guitar -
Everything You Need To Know To Play The Guitar
by Roger Evans!. Cost: $10!.95 and can be found or
ordered at most Book Stores!.
The first 15 pages alone will help you in deciding
what kind of guitar may be the best for You!.

Hope this be of some help and enjoy your guitar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
