I don't think it is any harder to learn the flute than it is to learn the clarinet!. I was a band geek for years with the clarinet and loved it!. I think you should go to a music store and "rent" each instrument for a short time!. Take them both home and try them both out !. !. !. see what kind of noise you can make!. This will give you the jist of how they work before you commit to one or the other!.

I read music, however my spouse, an incredible trumpet player for nearly 30 years, never learned himself!. It really isn't a requirement to play, just like you mentioned you've been singing in church choir without the know-how!.

Reading music is easy with the right teacher plus you have exposure to sheet music already!.

Give 'em both a try out! also, listen to music, like perhaps on iTunes or whatever, to some classical music!. Cannon in D is a good one!. There's lots!. Listen carefully to the flute and the clarinet and see if you "prefer" the sound of one versus the other!. If you have an infinity to the sound of one, that could possibly help you to make your decision!.

Good luck! Check out your local college's "music appreciation" course!.!.!.that is one other way to really learn about different instruments and the sounds they make and contribute to a song!.

ok theres like big differences in the flute and clarinet even though they are in the same woodwind family
i play flute and my 2 bff's play clarinet so i can tell you a lil about each

flute-very very fun to play but when you first start its a little hard
you will have to be able to alighn your mouth with the embrochure hole thats the hole you blow in just right so you can get a noise!. and you will have to make sure you are pressing the keys all the way down and be abl to control your air!. you will have to make fast and slower air for lower and higher g's and theres a difference in notes like e flats sharps and naturals but yeah its really fun!.

clarinet-clarient is awesome to!.its real fun but hard at first!. you will need
tto be able to play with
a reed and put just enough mouth piece in your mouth
and you will need to be able to cover the holes up all the way and
its the same with the notes in that there are flats sharps and naturals
and if you can play clarient you would also be able to play the super figgin awesome sax!

good luck

I would say flute right away because I play flute and piccolo myself, but I can easily reason a good procedure!.

Back in 5th grade, most kids will try out a lot of instruments, see which ones they liked!. Most of these decisions were based off which instruments sounded the coolest and which ones they were able to get a sound out of!. I wanted to play flute since 3rd grade because I loved how it sounded (I didn't know any other instruments besides guitar and piano anyway)!. I've been playing flute for six years and never regretted it!.

As I attended band classes and whatnot, I learned about more instruments!. Clarinets are amazing instruments!. They can sound very warm, yet they can also be that spine-chilling whispers in some ominous pieces!. Flutes are generally melody-carriers and have the most moving parts!. They are both really fun instruments!.

Dolphin recommended to simply try a multitude of instruments!. I'm learning how to play French Horn right now because it immediately appealed to my tastes when it came to trying it out!. If you try both the flute and clarinet, you can find you like both, one of them, or even neither of them! Choose what you like the most!. Listen to a lot of music clips to determine which sound you like best (mind, you can achieve a lot of bizarre and different sounds from any instrument)!.

Reading music takes practice!. It changes with clefs (both flute and clarinet are in treble or G-clef), transposition, and more!. You would generally need to learn the basics of music reading, which you can find pretty anywhere online!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm not expecting a 'best answer' vote, but from experience as a stage manager and occasional vocalist in a jazz combo you will get more work as a musician if you can play both!.
Don't ignore the saxophone - it is a marvellous instrument, and oboists are in short supply!. The bassoon is fun!.
[Slightly off the topic, but harpists and double bassists have constant problems getting transport to gigs!.]

Added later: Rip my heart out is right - clarinet players do play awesome sax!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You need to make up your own mind!. Anything that we tell you is based on our experiences!. I am sure you will hear from both sides!.
Pick the instrument because you like the sound and what it will do!. Do not pick it because someone tells you it is cool or easy to play!.
