Question: How many hours/day should I practice violin if I want to play!.!.!.!.!?
Mendelssohn or Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole (or pieces of similar level)!. I am 17 and am working on Mozart concerto in G major!.

I did an honors orchestra this past weekend and was very impressed with some of the other students and the staff, and I really want to get more serious about playing!.

I know I need to improve a lot!. My vibrato is very inconsistent and I don't use it nearly enough, and my intonation needs work in the higher positions, so I know I wouldn't get THAT good anytime soon!.

I guess my real question is how many hours per day people who can play higher level works practice, how long it took them to get there, and what sorts of exercises do they do to improve!.

I have a teacher, but I want other people's opinions!.

A total of at least 4 hours would be my suggestion!. That means however many hours you practice in school, at lessons, and at home combined!. I like to tell my students to break up their practice times!. Practice in little segments of time focusing on only a few measures at a time!. This way you don't get to bored, you can go off do other homework and come back, and you can perfect you music better!. There are many other tricks I can give you to become a better player if you ever need any!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

my teacher's rule is however long your lesson is, that's how long you neeed to practice!. at least!.!.!.!.

like, if you wanna practice 1 hour a day, do 20 minutes at a time, with a 5 minute break!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

practice about two hours a day once you get better you can go to one and a half hour and so on but don't stop practicing because you will forget everythingWww@QuestionHome@Com

Depends on what you mean by higher lever! Some musicians I know do 8 hours a day! But sometimes its not quantity its quality! As above 4 hours of SOLID practice would be a good thing though!Www@QuestionHome@Com

You have a great start and attitude, You realize you don't know it all!. This is all good!.!.
As for practice time!.
Find out how long you can practice and stay focused!. Few teenagers can remain on focus for an hour!. My students were best for 15 to 20 minutes on the average!.
Keep the violin out!. Keep the music out!. Every time you can play something that you are comfortable with!. Then something that is challenging and then something fun!. Figure out how long you can do this and maintain focus!. After that length of time!. Stop and come back later!. Your total for the day may be a little less, but more quality practice happens!.
total time at 17, I would aim for 90 minutes a day with 1 or 2 days of only 15 or 20 minutes!.
One of my students ask me to just sit in and listen to them practice and to reserve all instruction until they finished!. It was a great idea!. I was able to understand the students habits much better and make suggestions!. You might try this with your teacher!.
