its a gibson les paul i just boughtWww@QuestionHome@Com

I have yet to find an "out of the box" guitar ready to be played!.
Most guitars are "shipped" with new set of strings but often times (particuarly with factory-made guitar) the instrument have been in a warehouse for months at a time and even the "new" strings may loose their playability!.
I have found "new" strings with rust on them so you can imagine how long those strings (and the guitar) been in storage!.
You should always tune the new instrument (after a visual inspection of the strings) and keep re-tuning for
the next few times you use the guitar since all strings
regardless of quality need to be "stretched" until they can retain the proper intonation!.
After a few times if the guitar does not keep the strings
"in tune" is a possibility that the guitar itself need to be
checked by a guitar tech at your local store!.
Checking the guitar by a tech will not be expensive and that will be a good time for you to have him/her set the "action" you prefer on the instrument!.
(Action invloves setting the distance of the strings to the
fret board) Different players have different choices based on their manner and style of playing!.

Good Luck and Enjoy your guitar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most professional guitarists would take their new guitar to a technician to have it set up: that mostly involved adjusting the bridge and neck so that the action of the strings (how far they are above the fingerboard) is most comfortable for that guitarist!.

If you shop, there will be some music stores in your town that will do it for a reasonable price!. There's one that I trust locally that charges $30; your town may vary!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

if a real American made Gibson it was set up at the factory, if a Chinese knock off/ Epiphone/Epoch you should take it to your local luthier for set up, however I take all my guitars to my local luthier for a once over anyway, and I dont even own a Chinese guitar, go figure!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The first things I do with any guitar is change the strings, adjust the action (string height) and maybe adjust the truss rod (only if absolutely necessary)!. If you're not familiar with the last 2, then have a pro do it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

yea, you need to tune the guitar!.!.!.
and you also need an amplifier if you don't have one

you can play the guitar without the amp but!.!.!. it wont be loud enough for anything more than warming upWww@QuestionHome@Com

Ralph, not new in a box!. You need to tune the strings and then get accustom to the instrument!. Take it to a music center or store and someone will know how its done!. Sweet music friend!.
