Hi Ryan

Pretty close to the truth since the fingering is the same except you would have to learn chords etc!.!.

The best example of what you are saying is to listen to Yngwie Malmsteem !. This guy can play and he started his career on fixing violins and then got interested in guitar!.
That accounts for his scallop fingerboards!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To an extent!.

Everyone is different!. What is easy for me may not be easy for you, and vice versa!. Personally, I did learn to play guitar after learning the violin, and in many ways, it was easy!.

I was able to recognize notes without having to test it out!. It wasn't necessary to look up musical terms, because I knew them already!. Tuning the instrument was a breeze, after years of tuning a violin!. I was already used to the pressure of the strings on the pads of my fingers, as well as the occasional awkward positioning, which many people struggled with!.

However, you may find that playing is occasionally awkward and difficult!. The sounds made by a violin and a guitar differ greatly, and it's easy to struggle with becoming "good" as a guitarist when your idea of how to play music is greatly different!.

However, if you've the opportunity to learn the guitar, I suggest you go ahead and try it out!. It wasn't for me, but if you've got a genuine passion for it, it's a great experience!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Contrary to what the previous poster says, violin fingering and guitar fingering are NOT the same!.

You will still need at least some guidance to learn guitar!. You'll need to learn chords, for example!. The scale fingerings will be different!. You're accustomed to playing with a bow, if you take up guitar, you'll need to learn to play with a pick!. Stuff like that!.

However, since you presumably understand more about music than the average guitar beginner, you will make faster progress!. I started off on guitar at age 13, then in my 30's I took up mandolin, banjo and fiddle, and found that my previous experience on guitar made it easier to pick up the mandolin and banjo, and then my experience on mandolin helped me learn the fiddle, since mandolin and violin are tuned and fingered exactly the same!. Actually it differs between people!. When you master the violin, you will be a good sight reader and general musician!. This means that you will be able to play the guitar, but with help as the techniques are really different!. As for the other guy, the fingering of guitar and violin are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!. Maybe he thinks they are the same because they have the same notes and is a non-musical person!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your violin tutor is smoking some good stuff!. They are two different instruments entirely!.
An example of a violinist playing guitar on occasion!? Andrew Bird

Metallica!? who's that!?

If you are a decent musician, learning a 2nd instrument should come easier, but it is not a guarantee!.
Learning a 2nd instrument usually adds to your skills, but can dip into the time you have for music!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I really dont know why your tutor would say that - they both have strings and apart from that - two different instruments, two different techniques for playing them!.it will not be easier than playing any other different instrumentWww@QuestionHome@Com
