Check out the Master Theory series published by Kjos!. These are self-study workbooks!. Each page introduces a new concept on the top half, on the bottom, is the application!.

I've taught "formal" music for 18 years!. Sometimes your ear is all you need!. Don't beat yourself up, decide what you want to do with your guitar and harmonica!. Make a plan, then follow it!.

I do suggest you learn beginning piano alongside your theory, it will help what you learn make sense!. You can see the half/whole steps, see the scale patterns, etc!.!.!.

Oh, and each instrument has its best method books!. Mel Bay Publications seems to have some great stuff for learning an instrument in general, but to learn an individual instrument's nuances, find a teacher, or someone else that plays and see what publications they use for studying!.

A lot of music stores can recommend good teachers for private lessons!. With guitar you can have the teacher teach you the tab type of playing which shows the strings and where to place your fingers instead of actually reading music!. Music stores also sell a ton of books with tab if you want to check them out on your own!. There are lots of online sites too for tab!. Just pick a song and search that with guitar tab!. It is pretty easy to teach yourself the chords also as there are lots of online sites for this and some that play how it should sound!. This helps in playing by ear as you learn what notes go together!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can learn alot of things by ear and it is def!. an essential skill to have!. However, there really is no substitute for just hitting the books and learning music theory!. It helps out so much!.But before you get into that stuff, just play around and get familiar with the feel of the instrument first, not necessarily for large amounts of time, but just a little bit everyday!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you should learn overall musical theory, after that you can play almost anything, its universal, and i know theory is hard but it will be worth it, combine that with playing buy ear and youll be good at it i play by ear too!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
