Question: Can I learn oboe without a private instructor!?
My school is losing it's two oboe players next year!. I have been playing clarinet for the past 6 years, and for the past 4 I have been wanting to play oboe!. But my family doesn't have the time or money to give me a private instructor!.

I was thinking of telling my band teacher I'm interested in learning oboe soon so I could audition back into our adv!. band class on oboe in May!. Do you think I can learn it without a private instructor!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

See if your band teacher can work with you after school!. You will have real problems with your embouchure and you need a real teacher to help you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Of course you can learn oboe!
However, before you take up this great instrument, a few important facts that you may or may not know!. First of all, oboes are keyed in C and clarinets in Bb!. Oboe reeds are different: double reeds (two pieces of cane stuck together and bound)!. That means that you don't need as much air as you need on a clarinet!. Oboe reeds are also much more expensive!.

If you had the chance to play the recorder as a young musician, the oboe fingerings are similar!. Middle C is {1-2-3},{1-2-3-4} on oboe, but--you know this obviously--Middle C on a clarinet is {1-2-3},{0-0-0-0}!.

Clarinet and oboe both play in the same clef, and so you won't have to worry about learning a new clef!. An instructional book may help you when you learn the oboe!. However, the oboe has a smaller range; you won't be able to reach those altissimo notes!.

If you need advice on specific equiptment for oboes, you can speak with your nearby music store to see what they carry and what would be best for you!. If you want advice on fingerings, you can find great fingering charts on http://www!.wfg!.woodwind!.org/index!.html or in the back of some instructional books!.

I hope that you enjoy the oboe! =)

Oboes without instruction tend to sound like ducks calling!. Finding an online forum community full of oboe-ists could help, though!. That way you could ask online for help or advice!.

If you go through with it, always listen to oboe recordings, so you have something to strive for, and don't get lost!.

And I agree with the man above who said that oboe reeds are quite expensive! Many oboe players make their own reeds, which is definitely an art in itself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Almost any other instrument, yes!. But oboe, no!. It's one of the hardest insturments there is, and it is very, very easy to play badly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

ahh you will have to practice VERY HARD and the reeds are expensive GOOD LUCK!Www@QuestionHome@Com
