Question: What do I look for in a good drum set!?
My husband and I would like to get my dad for Christmas this year a good drum set!. He used to play drums in a band back in the day and we would like to help him bring back some good memories!. I've been looking online at drum sets, but I don't really know what I am looking for!. What do I look for in a good drum set and what would I expect to pay!? also, most sets I've found have 5 pieces, is that the normal amount and size!? Please help!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
1!. hardware should be "double braced"

2!. cymbals that come with cheaper sets sound like crap, be prepared to spend $500 to get good sounding cymbals if you buy a cheap set!.

3!. wwbw!.com is a good site to find quality drumsets, do not buy off ebay or craigslist unless you truly know what you are looking for!.

4!. good set brands include yamaha, pearl, gretsch, ludwig

5!. 5 piece is normal

6!. a good throne (seat) is very important to an older player-spend extra here if you can!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

5-piece drum kits are fairly standard, although 4-piece is common as well, not to mention a little cheaper!.

Stick to brand names like Pearl, Yamaha, Ludwig, Tama!. Their entry level kits are all decent, although I would go with a high-end kit for a working drummer!.

Contrary to another post here, you don't need double braced hardware if your dad is just going to play in the garage!. That type of heavy-duty hardware is only necessary for drummers who pound on their drums, or if you have very heavy drums and cymbals!. They aren't needed for the average hobby drummer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yep, the normal drumset is 5 pieces, and depending on the brand, it could cost from $300-$700!.

This usually includes-
Snare, base, two top toms, floor tom, hi hat and crash cymbal!.

your best bet is looking on craiglist(dot)com or ebay!.

Good luck!. :)Www@QuestionHome@Com
