As a music teacher / choral director I'm going to tell you something you probably already know!. Practice Practice Practice

Here are some tips:

1) Work on identifying and singing intervals
2) Practice your rhythms
3) Find a partner to practice with

I found a couple websites that you can use that will give you a good start!.

http://www!.teoria!.com/exercises/index!.ht!.!.!.
http://www!.practicesightreading!.com/inde!.!.!.

You also need to find out how difficult the sight reading will be!. For example:

What meter (or meters) will they be presenting you with!?

How difficult will the rhythms be (sixteenth/eighth note combinations or only dotted half and quarter notes, etc!.)!?

Will you be reading Treble or Bass Clef!?

Will you be doing the sight reading portion with a group (SATB) or will it only be you (Tenor or Bass line only)!?

Will the audition piece include accidentals (sharps and flats)!?

And finally what sight reading method are you most comfortable with:

Solfegio (Do, Re, Mi), Numbers (1-8), and finally the not so favored (la, la, la)!?

Get your current music teacher to help you answer these questions!.

Like I said the most important thing is that you practice diligently!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Please refer to answers I have already given about this, in which I explained in detail how learn pitch accuracy (which Can be learned - you just need to correct exercises), SOLFEGE - this is crucial! - and rhythm skills!. The people who say * just do it a lot* are NO help at in preparing you!. I have taught vocal music since 1971, and wrote my MM thesis in sightreading skills!. I am a competition judge in NY and prepare and teach MANY students every year!. Again - please see my previous responses!. There are trolls about who give ME Thumbs Down, no matter what I say - they just are angry that I disagreed with them some time back!. Since I have almost ONE THOUSAND Best Answers, I think my value here has been recognized!. Good luck with your auditions - I hear these in NY every year, and my son judges in PA!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the sense of pitch mostly can not be taught!. however, by taking sheet music and reading them randomly would help you and prepare you for the unexpectedness of the test,Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's nearly impossible to sing/play as you read!. You always have to be looking a beat, or even a measure ahead!. This can really only be done with practice (at least in my experience)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
