You are going to have to let your thumb place where it wants to and be prepared to move it as it needs, depending on your style of play!.

In some chords, for instance, you will need to mute the low E string to prevent it from sounding and, sometimes the thumb is the only way to do it!. That means that the neck is braced against the palm, because the thum is almost clear around to the front of the neck!.

But when you do some barred chords, you may need the strength of the thumb to apply pressure to the neck, against the barre finger!.

Don't be so concerned about any preconceived notions of what you can or cannot "unlearn!." You DON'T unlearn!. You just learn new things!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am from the old school!. You NEVER EVER use your thumb for making chords!.!.!.you use your thumb under the neck of the instrument to support your other four fingers which do all the work!. If you want to do full chords, that is what the index finger is for!. Not only that, but you will eventualy give yourself carpal tunnel syndrom from stressing your wrist because it is un natural to try to hold down the base strings like that while trying to extend your other fingers!.

I would suggest you consult a classical guitar method book and observe how to form chords without the use of your thumb!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I move my thumb so it is comfortable!. When starting you might think there is no comfortable position, but you will find your spots!. For chords I usually am in the middle and my thumb moves up when I go to higher strings (such as the high E string and B string, if you are in standard (EADGBE) tuning)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

don't think about it so much!. most people will tell you to put your thumb in the middle so you get the most range from your fingers!. You can use your thumb to hit a note on your low E string to if you don't like playing bar chords in the weird power chord shape way!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
