Metal draws upon a lot of musical styles, so it's unfair to reel off a list of things that it involves!.

I would say, however, that you get yourself immersed in metal and listen to some bands that define the genre!.

I know it's a bit passé to mention these in this day and age, but bands like Megadeth and Pantera (and bands of that ilk) are a great place to start, as they are generally sited as innovators of the genre!. Learn some riffs, and get the feel for the techniques that they use!. It's all uphill from there my friend!.

I personally find that if you go for straight-laced technique learning you'll come out the other end with an awful lot of knowledge, and not an awful lot of skill and flare!. You really have to get the feel for metal, and you can only do that by jamming in my opinion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There isn't really a set list of techniques you need to know to play metal music, but some basics like alternate picking and palm muting are very common in metal music and would obviously help!.

I'd suggest just learning some metal songs that you enjoy listening to!. This way, you're not just practicing techniques, which usually gets most people bored quickly, and you're learning songs that you can play along to!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Very fast hands!. Metal is build on upbeat, really fast alternations between strings!. And some people find it easier if they naturally play aggressively!. You can't have been playing things by Jason Mraz or India!.Arie, and expect to pick up a guitar and start killing something like Metallica !.Www@QuestionHome@Com
