A lot of vocal techniques involve visualizing the sounds in different places, and visualizing weird things - it's odd sounding, but it really does help!

1) enunciate your words more than you normally would - When you sing, you automatically become harder to understand!. Record yourself singing normally, and then record yourself singing with the words overly enunciated!. Visualize the "s"s and "t"s and "p"s and "f"s as if they're right on the tip of your mouth, and really make them heard!. Listen to both recordings and you'll realize that the over-exaggeration of letters doesn't sound as weird as you'd think, and it actually makes you much more understandable

2) Breathe from your diaphragm - if all your breaths are high up, in your chest, you'll run out of air really quick, and won't be able to hold on to the long notes!. Practice by imagining you're breathing in through your feet, and out through your mouth!. If you do that, you'll realize that you're breathing correctly, without really trying!

3) Keep the back of your mouth tall, but the front of your mouth small!. When people sing, they sing with very wide mouths because it makes it easier for their own ears to hear, but often makes it sound worse to an audience!. Make an "oooo" sound!. Then imagine you've got an ice cream cone in your mouth, with the back of your throat tall and open, and the front of your mouth in a small "o" shape!. Breathe through your feet and then make the "ooooo" sound, with a tall throat and tiny lips!.

4) Keep your chin down!. It's a natural reaction to "reach" for notes by reaching your chin up, but that puts pressure on your vocal cords!. Keep your chin down, and reach for notes with the top of your head, instead!.

Those exercises are a cheap and easy way to really help with your sound!. You won't be able to get much more without formal training, but keep a recording device around and get used to how you sound and pay attention to the things that make you sound better and worse!.
