Question: New snare drum!? or snare heads!?
I bought a drum kit from my cousin for 250, he only paid around 400$ for it, nothing expensive, more of a beginner kit!. Though, it sounds HORRIBLE!. The toms sound nothing like they should sound like, the floor tom especially!. And the snare is just completely out of whack (it doesn't sound anything like a snare)!. The kit wasn't abused physically, or even played much, but it could of possibly been left out in the cold a few times (in a garage)!.

Could that be the reason it sounds so bad!?
Maybe they the drum heads are too tight or too lose (I tried experimenting with no luck)!.
Should I replace the drums completely, or try new heads!?

The current drum heads are Remo, not sure which type though!. The snare is coated, and everything else is clear

The kit's brand is Westbury and the symbols are Camber!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I googled around and read a few forums, like this one:
http://www!.sputnikmusic!.com/forums/showt!.!.!.

Basically, it sounds like if you put some good, new heads on the drums and get them properly tuned up, they might not sound too bad!. the cymbals are probably a bigger worry!. Bad cymbals can really mess up a kits sound!.

the heads on the drums could have been messed up being stored in a cold garage for too long!.

Remo heads have been around forever, but you might ask at your local music store if there are better ones to use!.

I'm more of a guitar player than a drummer, but I do play drums competently enough to play gigs on them!. So I'd say invest a few bucks in good cymbals and good heads, tune em up and you'll probably be much happier with the sound!.

If you are a hobby musician or just like to jam in your garage with some friends that should be fine for what you'll need them for!.

(you should have seen the crappy old kit I used to make my own 4 track one man band recordings with !! Yours would seem like a nice Ludwig kit in comparison )

New heads on drums can sometimes make a drum set sound like a whole new set!. What you can do first, is make sure the current heads are on right!. There are a bunch of videos on youtube if you need help!. If they still don't sound good, I would just buy new heads!. Personally, I like remo heads but most brands are just as good!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
