Same as with jazz, you listen! Listen while you're playing to respond to the rhythm section / vocalist / other horns, and listen to other ska bands to get a feel of what it's like!.

Ska is mostly little riffs, and you have to be able to pick up on them quick!

also, solos should "make sense"!.!.!. try to stay away from the seemingly random style of avant-garde and stick to the more melodic soloing styles!. Generally, keep them to 8 bar phrases, even if your solo is longer than that!.

Another general rule, is play fat!. Even if you're playing a stacatto, make the notes nice and round (remember that stacatto means "seperated"- not "short")!. also, it should be fat, not splat!.

And last, show off what it is to be a trombone player!.!.!. fast slides are part of the style, as well as "growls", "doits", and "wah-wahs"!.

Anyways, have fun! :)

PS- Some ska bands to check out if you aren't familiar with the style are The Skatalites, Operation Ivy, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Wailers, Save Ferris, the Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Five Iron Frenzy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
