Question: Is it an insult if you get a small part in a play!?
I'm majoring in theatre!. Anyway, tuesday I auditioned for a play!. Something I've never done before!. We found out who was in the cast today ad I was actually surprised to see my name on the list!. There's a total of 16 characters in the play!. My part is kind of small!. I don't know how many lines I have yet since I just found out, but I'm only in 3 scenes!. I don't knnow how may scenes there are yet!. Does it mean that you're not as good of an actor if you get small parts!? I have self esteem issues and am always comparing how well I do to everyone else!. I'm a bit of a perfectionist!. I'm pretty sure the teacher/director knows I'm kind of insecure, so do you think she gave me the par because she felt bad for me!? I'm very paranoid, lol!. I want to make this the best performance ever and really give the character!.!.!.character!. I'm playing a little old lady named "Ingrida"!. This is my first play!. Do you think this is an insult!? Does it mean I'm not as good as other people!? Do you think I only got the part cause the teacher knows me and possibly that I'm kind of lacking in the esteem department!? I know, I'm paranoid!. Thanks for any info =)Www@QuestionHome@Com

There might be some others who were perceived to be better actors!. But that's hardly a criticism of you – nobody starts off playing huge parts!. They need practice!. It's the same for everybody!. Later, you'll play bigger parts because you're more experienced and truly better at acting!.

also, sometimes parts are seen as more appropriate for certain personalities!. Perhaps you were chosen for this role (even though it's small) because you were seen as a good fit; if so, that's definitely a compliment!.

Or it could be a combination of the two!. Either way, you've got more substantial parts in your future, as does anyone who sticks with it!. So congratulations!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It it definitely not an insult!. All it means is that in the casting directors opinion he sees, in you, something that is needed for the particular part!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Why would you think of this as an insult you got picked! Think of those who didn't even get a part ! You really, really need to work on your self esteem and self image issuesWww@QuestionHome@Com

Like they said!.

This kind of paranoia hits most of us some time or other!. Live a few more years and it will trouble you less often!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

there is a well know show biz quote - "there are no small roles, only small actors"Www@QuestionHome@Com

Think of it this way: you could have not gotten any part!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Good job! For 16 characters it is an honor to be cast!. If you get a small part, it does NOT mean you're not as good as some others! It just might mean that they're blonde and you're a brunette or they can dance better than you can!. No offense, but the leads are obviously more experienced, but don't let that get you down! I love to act/sing/dance and once my school was doing Godspell and I didn't audition!. When I was singing in the choir, it was just killing me to watch all the other people on stage having a good time, but I did my absolute best!. After the show, I got numerous comments and praise that I was the best in the choir and my energy really made a difference!. If you want bigger roles in the future, be a good example to your other cast members, impress the director, and most importantly, do your best! Oh and if you want to major in theatre, you might want to get some more experience first!. :) All actors and actresses start small! Have a great time!Www@QuestionHome@Com

My old music/theatre teacher always said that there's no such thing as a small part!. if u give it ur all for that role, they will see how good u truely are!. Once in a play that my school did, "The Hobbit", there was this girl who got the part of the troll-thing!. It wasn't nearly the lead in the play, but everyone, my friends, my music teacher, and i absolutely think that she was the best actor in the entire play because she got so into the character and gave it her all!. I definently gave her mad props!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Every part in a play is just as important as the next!. Just like the people that work backstage and all that the play wouldn't be able to go on if one part is missing!. also do you think Tom Cruise started in the main roles of films!? Everyone has to start somewhere, just give it your all and maybe next time a bigger part may be more suited for you!. You might not have gotten the main roles as the director thought someone else would have been better suited to it, it might also be that the director thought you would be PERFECT for the role of Ingrida!. Just go and enjoy yourself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
