Question: How to be a conductor!?
I have a question !. What would you reccomend for a person in High School who is taking piano lessons and would like to be a conductor!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

It would be helpful to take at least one instrument you can play in the high school band, although you will have quite a bit of catching up to do with those who have been playing since 5th grade!. Your musical ability and all those piano lessons will help enormously, of course - you know both treble and bass clef, so you will be able to read music for just about any instrument!.

also, attend as many classical concerts as you can and watch the conductors!.

There are some good books out there, too - your piano teacher may be able to help you there!. One is The Compleat Conductor - by, I think, Gunther Schuller!. It's probably pretty advanced (and pricey), so look for others, as well!. Wait - even better: The Art of Possibility, by Benjamin Zander, conductor of the Boston Philharmonic!. It's not your usual conducting book, but it discusses the possibilities for getting the most out of every player!. Fascinating!.

Another thing: many orchestral works often call for chorus (last movement to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, etc!.) - can you join the school chorus or a church choir!? If church choir, you might look for the largest, best choir in your area - because it probably will have attracted the best director!. You can learn a lot just by watching people!.

Is there a college nearby offering conducting classes in the evenings!? Is there any kind of summer music festival in your area that offers seminars!? If you're in New Jersey, Westminster Choir College has one - I don't know the requirements as to who can attend!. If you live in eastern Virginia, Virginia Wesleyan College offers a Sacred Music Conference each July!. It's $65 for a full day of learning under a pro - one year, it was someone from Juilliard!. These are geared toward choral conducting, but the basics are the same!.

And do let the professional musicians you encounter know of your aspirations, they can be quite a help, and also tell you where they studied music!. Now is the time to start thinking of where you want to get those all-important music degrees!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Uhhh Yeah- No mention of being in an orchestra or chamber group- how about doing that and learning a few more instruments along with being able to compose musical pieces- the question sort of shows how little respect for the skills required to become an orchestra conductor- it sounds more like you just want to be in control of something!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
