I am a professional classical musician, as is my husband!. We retired from careers of over 30 years each as choral directors, and had very structured lives in schools!. However, we always kept the other side of our artistic lives s professional performers!. We now are working in chamber music, both of a commercial (wedding, etc) nature, and developing our concert contacts on a broader base!. We have seen all kinds of addicted, poser, excuse-making people in our lives!. Yes, your nature as an artist must be passionate - you cannot imagine a day without what you love!. But this is channeled into your productivity in your ART!. You do not spend hours every day *at liberty* - you have a life that is rich and full!. You practice alone, you rehearse with others, you do research, you do all the normal household things that other people do, run errands, etc!. Addictions and other excuses are the refuge of the inept!. For various reasons - lack of work ethic, lack of talent, insecurity, *coolness* - they think that being stoned will allow them to transcend these limitations, and reach great heights!. Only in their OWN befuddled minds! Ever been the designated driver, and watched other people at a party get drunk and silly, and you see that their are JERKS - and last week, when YOU were drinking, you must have been just as big a jerk!?!? Hmm !. !.

I had a loser clarnettist tell me, when I was in college, that he was SUCH A GENIUS that he had to stay stoned most of the time just so that he could function at the same slow dull speed as the rest of the world he scorned!. Can you believe it!? This was only true in HIS stoned mind - the rest of life and music just passed him by - causing him to get angrier and more stoned !. !. !.

If you know people who use their pseudo-artistic fancies as an excuse to be part of a drug culture, then you will soon see that they are pathetic posers!. The successes in music tend to look more like what you would THINK business people look like - focused, sober, organized ( even if messy-looking !. !. !.), clean, and sensible - even if flamboyant in their artistic expressions!. Hip and cool are often covers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Assuming it's true, my guess is that it's because they live irregular, solitary lives with none of the things that regulate most people's lives!. For instance, a musician may perform or a couple of hours a day, if that much!. The rest of the time, he's waiting around, rehearsing or at liberty!. Writers spend long hours alone with their computer!. As the old saying goes, "Idle hands are the Devil's workshop!." Contrast this with the life of a guy who goes into an office every day for eight hours!. He's not alone; he has responsibilities he must keep to keep his job!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
