I strongly suggest renting or buying a rather cheap cello if you're just starting out!. Its sound quality won't matter when you're learning how to hold the bow or where to place your fingers!.
You should visit local "violin shops"; The name is misleading, but these shops actually specialize in all the instruments of the "violin family"--violin, viola, cello, and string bass!. Although the price may not correctly convey a cello's quality, most intermediate/advanced players look for cellos over $1,000!.

If you'd like to buy a cello online, I recommend http://www!.sharmusic!.com!. They have all the music accessories and necessities you can think of, and their service is pretty good!.
They have a great "In-Home Trial Program" that allows potential buyers to try out instruments before making the final decision!. Buying instruments (especially cellos) is a big investment, and you'll want to make the most informed, smart decision, so hold in the money until your second cello--when you'll know what to look and listen for!
