I strongly suggest renting or buying a rather cheap cello if you're just starting out!. Its sound quality won't matter when you're learning how to hold the bow or where to place your fingers!.
You should visit local "violin shops"; The name is misleading, but these shops actually specialize in all the instruments of the "violin family"--violin, viola, cello, and string bass!. Although the price may not correctly convey a cello's quality, most intermediate/advanced players look for cellos over $1,000!.

They have a great "In-Home Trial Program" that allows potential buyers to try out instruments before making the final decision!.
