well your son could probally handle a full size ACCOUSTIC guitar

i know i did when i was his height

if it is in length a guitar when placed straight up should be at your childs upper chest to his chin i'd say the full size will work for him he will need to keep his guitar for a while when he is still learning

i know a lil bit about guitars your can buy a cheap guitar and with some mineral oil 400 grit water proof sandpaper and some hex keys

and transform it into an expensive guitar

All guitars are approximately the same size, with the exception of the reduced 1/2, 3/4 ,etc sized ones!. Those reduced size guitars are pretty much toys made for children!.

I would recommend strongly against buying one unless you have extra money to burn!. It will sound bad, and he'll grow out if it really quick!.

He'll be able to play a full-sized guitar just fine!. His arms are definitely long enough to reach to the first fret!.Go to guitar center and have him hold some!.

I doubt this will be the case, but if he *really* really has a problem with the depth (ie, how far it sticks out from your stomach) of a typical full-size acoustic guitar - and assuming you're getting an acoustic - consider one of the shallow-body ones like those Ovation makes, like this for example http://guitars!.musiciansfriend!.com/produ!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I started playing guitar at 8 yrs old, And I had one that was a 3/4 scale classical guitar!. It sounded just fine!. I used it until I was in my 20's, because even though I'm like 5'10" , I have really small hands!. So I always play Fender electric guitars!.
You can get 7/8, 3/4, 1/2 size guitars, but I'd stick with either 3/4 or 7/8 size, especially for an acoustic guitar, otherwise the size of the body will tend to make the guitar "weak" sounding!.

for instance check out some samples:

also google
"3/4"+"scale"+"guitar"

This will give you all sorts of hits for smaller scale guitars!.
They are not just "toys" as one person said!.
Sure, you can go to Toys R Us and get a small "kiddie" guitar or "first act" guitar and those are crap!.
But there are good guitars scaled down for smaller people!. They don't cost all that much, and when he does get larger, you can always get a normal size guitar!.

If you get him a big guitar, especially a classical one the neck may be too wide, and he might get discouraged from playing it!.
There's nothing wrong with playing a guitar that fits your body size!.

Anyone who says different is just afraid of looking "uncool" and giving you bad advice because of their own prejudices!.

Hmmm, well you can get a mini strat!. Which is basically like a low end stratocaster, but mini!. Good for young players, I always trust fender/squier when it comes to learning/performance/sound/longevity!.

You can see it here: http://guitars!.musiciansfriend!.com/produ!.!.!.

There is a picture on the page that shows a girl holding it for size comparision!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com
