If the action is unreasonably high, you'll probably need reset the neck!. If you don't want to pay the $300, you can do it yourself!. Be forewarned, it is a pretty involved and tedious project!.

My 12-year-old son and I did that on an Ovation guitar which we bought from Guitar Center's junk pile for $25!. We got excellent results using just basic hand tools and epoxy!. The hardest part was scraping off the old epoxy!. But after a lot of labor, the guitar now plays and sounds great !

Depending on what needs to be done, $300 may not be unreasonable!. You didn't say what the professional proposes to do to it!. If it needs a neck reset then $300 is a bargain!. Strings aren't going to make a significant difference when the action is that bad!. You may be able to make fine adjustments by tweaking the truss rod but if the action is still really bad then you have major problems!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i wonder what you mean by Luthiers, is it Lucia as in Paco!.
well most people seem to have given you a good answer!.
It seems you love the guitar and have a very very bad one,!.
Trouble is there are no half way mark in that field, its cheap or pricey, no half way!.
I take it you mean nylon string guitars, check out Paco de Lucia guitar on sale on web and not so expensive!.
good luckWww@QuestionHome@Com

http://www!.youtube!.com type in "guitar setup" should find something there that will help!.
I could get your guitar set up for less than $50 keep lookingWww@QuestionHome@Com

you either get a new guitar, or pay 300 dollars!?
theres no other solution!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes the $300 guy is a rip off!.

I had the same problem with my acoustic's action being way to high!. Go to Sam Ash!.!.!. most of their stores usually have a guitar tech/luthier!. Their setups usually only cost about 10-20 bucks!. The guy who did mine charged me 40 bucks simply because my guitar needed a little more work (bridge needed to be sanded down, etc!.) It played amazingly afterwards!.

But until then, it might be a good idea to practice with the action the way it is!. You will develop finger strength and barring skills!. Afterwards, playing on a well setup guitar will be a breeze!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com
