I personally do some stretching exercises before sitting down for hours at a time to practice!. Some arm reach-for-the-skies, wrist circles, shoulder circles, and others can really loosen you up and promote flexibility and endurance for long practices!.

You should also take breaks if you feel tense, frustrated, or tired!. Do some more stretches, drink water/juice, and take a breather before diving back into the Bach and Haydn!

Scales are definitely the foundation for any practice routine!. I usually do about one hour of scales, arpeggios, and etudes before starting on the actual repertoire!. Scales build finger strength and memory of intervals, and will also loosen you up!. The repetition of note after note is like a time for meditation, mental preparation for the repertoire!.
