Question: My clarinet's middle "G" is flat, anyone know how to fix this!?
The rest of the clarinet seems to play just fine, it's just the one note that is noticeably flat!. I've checked and there is no obstruction in the "left thumb" opening!. Can this be fixed or have I just bought a bad clarinet!? It's about two years old and the make is SMS Academy!. The tone is great otherwise!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, doing as the other poster suggested (pulling out or pushing in your mouthpiece) will make the tuning for your entire clarinet go wrong!.

First, make sure the springs are working correctly in the thumb key ring (not register key) and the ring where your left index finger goes!. Push JUST the ring, and let go!.!.!. the rings should pop right up!.

If the springs are working right, it's a problem with the key height!.!.!. if you press just the first ring on the top joint (the metal circle where your left hand index finger goes), you will notice that it also pushes down a pad!. The pad is actually under the "A" key!.!.!. if this pad is loose, or the keys don't come up far enough, it will make your "G" about a quarter step flat!.

The best thing to do is take it in to the shop and let them know what's going on!.!.!. they will adjust the key height for you and you should be good to go in about 20 minutes!

also be aware that this can happen with other keys, so anytime you have your clarinet re-padded, make sure they check the key height!.!.!. especially the right pinky Eb/Ab key, and the cork underneath the key itself!.

Good luck, hope you get it fixed soon, and have fun! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think moving the mouthpiece in would fix the "G" problem, but the rest of you instrument would be tuned sharp!.!.!.!.

take it to an instrument shop!.

or email your local school's band director for recommendations!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
