You can look up for local music stores near you; they should have a good list of private teachers (and phone numbers/email) in the area!. Call or visit the store to find out!. You can also find professional cellists who teach at the colleges/universities and privately, usually from their homes or studios!.

Private teachers are the best way to start learning cello!. I don't think I've ever come across a cello class!.!.!.

If you don't want to pay the usual $50-$75 for each one-hour lesson, an alternative is calling a college music department and ask for any cello students interested in teaching!. Since students are not professional musicians, they charge less per hour!.

I'm guessing you're also going to be looking for an instrument!. My advice for new cellists is to either rent a cello, or buy a cello that is for beginner/intermediate players!.
It is not logical to buy a $1,000+ cello when the player cannot play it at first!. The first year or so is dedicated completely to learning the playing technique, and learning to read music (if you don't already know how)!. After you learn these basics, then you'll know what to look for in a cello, and you'll make a better purchase based on knowledge!.

You'll need to buy a cello, bow, music stand, rosin for the bow, and something that is very important--an endpin stopper (or also known as a rockstop/anchor)!. The endpin on the cello can slide on concrete or wood floors, so the endpin stopper acts as an anchor!. The one that most cellists use looks like this: http://sharmusic!.com/itemdy00!.asp!?T1=114!.!.!.

The website http://www!.sharmusic!.com is a great instrument company!. You can buy sheet music, music stands, instruments, cases --anything a musician needs!. There is the online catalog, but you can request for a free catalog to be sent to you in the mail!. I purchase items from Shar Music all the time! (and so do many other musicians I know)
