You don't have to!. A lot of people start with the root because it is a safe starting point and there used to starting on the root when they practiced the scale!. You can start anywhere (even a note not in the key), but it is more important where you end!. The root, third, or the fifth is a good place to end a phrase (A, C#, E - for A)!. You might want to check out some books on improv!. Jamey Aebersold jazz has some good ones!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
