Hi Joker

The size of the string is the diameter!.
!.009= 1st
!.011 = 2nd
!.016 = 3rd
!.024wound = 4th
!.033 wound =5th
!.042 wound =6th

That's a good all around gauge for any type of playing!. Good choice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Like the other answer said, it's the gauge (thickness) of the string!. 009 - 042 means that the high E is !.009 of an inch thick and the low E is !.042 of an inch!. The lighter the gauge the less tension there is on the string when it's tuned to pitch - therefore it's easier to play!. The trade off is less sound (power) generated!. A lot of blues players like Stevie Ray Vaughn used at least 10's for the sound!. There are even "mixed" sets like "light top, heavy bottom" But the most common for Electric Rock are the 009!.
PS - If you change gauges you might have to adjust the intonation and maybe the neck on your guitar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If your just starting out, I would stick with the !.009s: those are considered light guage strings (!.009 refers to the high e string)!. This is a very popular size!. !.011s are a thicker e string!. Thicker guage strings are usually used in jazz and heavier rock (because of drop tunings)!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The numbers are the widths of the strings!. Each string is a different width!. Depending on the type of music you play you would use diifferent strings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
