Yes, it can and WILL ruin your voice!. When you yell, your vocal folds (vocal chords) are slamming together!. Yelling large amounts will strain your vocal cords, and can not only make you lose your voice (or change it permanently, making it raspy), but you can develop calcium deposits or nodules, a condition that if not treated ealry could lead to surgery and permanent vocal damage!.

Now, these happen in extreme cases, but the bottom line is if your voice quality is important to you (especially for singing) then you should watch how you use it!. Overusing your voice means losing your voice!.

As far as getting your voice back, I'd suggest stop yelling now!. If there is a way to keep cheerleading without yelling, that would be ideal!. But your voice needs to rest and heal!. This could take days or weeks!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My oldest niece was a cheerleader for years, and her voice is a lot different from when she started!. It's harsher, more raspy now!. She's in her first year of college now so maybe the damage will subside after a few years but I don't know!. She sounds like those old women who were heavy drinkers and smokers all their lives!.

Man she'd die if she knew I said that too, but it's true, and I blame it on all that yelling!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Listen to Roberto, he knows what he is saying!.

I know that there is a lot of pressure on you to say the chants loud so that everyone can hear you, but is it worth permanent damage to your voice!? Back off on the volume!. When you feel the need to scream, use a high head-voice "Woooh!" rather than a chesty "Yaaah!"

Or you could just quit cheerleading and join choir!.!.!. :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes! I've had friends who cheered all through Jr!. High and High School, and now they have deep gravelly voices!. Just don't yell that loud! If it's a group of you, how can they tell how loud you are by yourself!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Any time you're using your voice a lot can cause you to lose it for a little bit!. I would just make sure to have tea and honey ready if you feel your voice start to give out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
